The Oval Invincibles beat London Spirit by nine wickets at Lord’s to enter the knockout stages of The Hundred. Maddie Villiers took 4-12 in a brilliant spell of bowling as the Spirits were bowled out for just 80 – the third-lowest total in a women’s hundred.
Amelia Kerr top scored for the Spirits with 31 runs but Charlie Deane was the only other batsman to reach double figures with 18 runs.
In reply, indomitable openers Lauren Winfield Hill and Suzy Bates put on 55 runs for the first wicket to set the platform for victory.
Bates was caught behind for 31 but Winfield Hill completed 44 not out as an unbeaten 42 balls to spare reached their target.
They join the Southern Brews for a place in the knockout stages.
The Invincibles are second in the table, one place below the Braves, but could still pip them to the top spot and take a direct route to the finals in doing so.
Here’s what happened:
- Danny Gibson was dismissed by Villiers on the second ball of Spirit’s innings and started the disaster.
- Spirit slipped to 4-2 after nine balls as Villiers also took the crucial wicket of Beth Mooney, the competition’s leading run-scorer.
- Eva Gray and Shabnam Ismail were out-showed by Villiers but bowled brilliantly and took two wickets each.
- Grace Scrivens got the impregnable wicket to fall, having Suzie Bates brilliantly caught by Mooney.
With one game remaining in the group stage, London Spirit takes on Birmingham Phoenix on Tuesday 30 August while The Oval Invincibles continue their fight for the top of the table as they take on Manchester Originals on Wednesday 31 August.
