ATP roundup: Jenson Brooksby upsets John Isner in Atlanta (2022)

ATP roundup: Sixth seed Jensen Brooksby defeated defending champion and second seed John Isner 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 on Friday. A matchup to reach the semifinals of the Atlanta Open. Isner, a six-time winner of the event, saved four match points in the next-to-last game before Brooksby sealed his victory.

Brooksby’s next bout is against another American, Frances Tiafoe. Fourth-seeded Tiafoe defeated eighth-seeded American Brandon Nakashima 6-4, 6-2.

Third-seeded Australian Alex de Menor served six aces in a 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 victory over France’s Adrien Mannarino to reach the semi-finals.

De Manor, 23, who won the event in 2019, will face Ilya Ivashka of Belarus in the semi-finals. The 28-year-old Ivashka defeated fifth seed Tommy Paul 6-2, 3-6, 6-1.

Top seed Carlos Alcaraz won 81.3 percent of his first serve points to reach the semifinals with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Argentina’s Facundo Bagnes in Umag, Croatia.

The Spaniard will next face Italian qualifier Giulio Zappieri, who defeated Spain’s Barnaby Zapata Miralles 7-5, 6-4. Zapperi had a 6-5 lead in aces.

Second-seeded Italian Janic Sener advanced to the semi-finals with a 6-4, 7-6 (5) win over Spain’s Roberto Carballes Baena. The sinner will face Franco Agamemnon, who defeated fellow Italian Marco Cecchinato 6-2, 6-1.

General Open

Third-seeded Roberto Bautista Agut won 70.2 percent of his first-serve points in a 6-3, 7-6 (3) win over fellow Spaniard Albert Ramos-Venolas to reach the final in Kitzbühel, Austria.
Bautista Agut raced to a 5-2 lead in the second set before fifth seed Ramos Vinolas charged and won the next four games. But Bautista Agut won the next game and won a tiebreaker to play Austrian wild card Filip Mesolic or Germany’s Yannick Hamfmann.

Misolic defeated Hanfmann 6-2, 2-6, 6-6 (1-0) after play was suspended due to heavy rain, and the match will resume on Saturday. Misolic defeated Serbia’s Dusan Lajovic 2-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3 earlier on Friday after their quarter-final match on Thursday was postponed a day due to rain.
