Fast bowler Shaheen Afridi to be fit for World Cup: Pakistan has named Shaheen Shah Afridi in their 15-man squad for the T20 World Cup in Australia, hoping the pace spearhead will recover from a knee injury in time for the tournament starting next month.

Left-arm fast bowler Afridi was ruled out of the recently concluded Asia Cup in the United Arab Emirates due to injury despite being included in the starting squad by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

Afridi has gone to London to recuperate and the PCB says the 22-year-old is expected to join the Pakistan squad in Brisbane on October 15.

Chief selector Muhammad Wasim said, “We are getting encouraging reports about Shaheen Shah Afridi, who is likely to resume bowling early next month.”

Before the trip to Brisbane, Pakistan will play a T20 International tri-series against hosts New Zealand and Bangladesh in Christchurch from October 7-14.

Fast bowler Mohammad Wasim also returned to the World Cup squad after fully recovering from a side strain sustained during the Asia Cup.

However, due to a knee injury, top-order batsman Fakhar Zaman was ruled out of the team led by Babar Azam. Fakhar was instead named in the traveling reserves with Shaun Masood included in the squad for the first time in the shortest format.

“We have a team that can … perform strongly in the T20 World Cup. That’s why we have shown faith and trust in almost the same players who will play the T20I after the 2021 World Cup in the UAE. have been part of the squad, added Mohammad Wasim.

“We have invested in these cricketers and it is only fitting that they get an opportunity to showcase their talent at the World Cup, an event for which they have been preparing and training hard.”

Former champions Pakistan will begin their T20 World Cup campaign with a blockbuster against arch-rivals India in Melbourne on October 23.
