Cricket-Shakib named Bangladesh T20 captain for Asia Cup, World Cup 2022

Cricket-Shakib named Bangladesh T20 captain squad for the Asia Cup and World Cup, the country’s Cricket Board (BCB) said on Saturday, ending speculation over the all-rounder’s future. Banned due to relationship with a betting company.

Shakib, 35, was reportedly told by the BCB this week to choose between playing for the national team or maintaining his endorsement deal with the betting site. He terminated his contract with the company on Thursday.

BCB has also announced a 17-man squad for the Asia Cup starting August 27 in the UAE, with batsman Sabbir Rehman and veteran wicketkeeper-batsman Mushfiqur Rahim both returning to the squad.

The selectors also included Noorul Hasan despite a fractured finger. The wicketkeeper led the T20 team in Zimbabwe last month before being ruled out of the series, which suffered an injury-hit 2-1 loss to Bangladesh.

Bangladesh will play a T20 tri-series against New Zealand and Pakistan starting October 16 ahead of the World Cup in Australia.
