World Cup 2022: Dates, draw, schedule,FIFA final for Qatar tournament

The World Cup 2022 will be held in Qatar from November 20 to December 18; 32 teams will compete in eight groups. On the second day of the tournament, England will face Iran while Wales will face the USA. Wales v England on November 29.

From key dates to kick-off times, here’s everything you need to know about this year’s tournament.

When and where is the 2022 World Cup?

The 2022 World Cup in Qatar kicks off on Sunday, November 20 at the Al Bait Stadium when the hosts take on Ecuador in Group A.

The tournament was originally due to start a day later with Senegal playing the Netherlands at the Al Thamama Stadium, but Qatar’s match was pushed back to August so it could open its home tournament.

England now takes on Iran on the second day of their Group B match with a 1 pm UK time kick-off just eight days after the Premier League closes on Monday 21 November.

Having qualified through the play-offs, Wales’ first match will also be on Monday 21 November.

Wales will then take on England in Group B on Tuesday 29 November.

The final will be played at the Lusail Stadium in Doha on Sunday 18 December, a week before Christmas.

What is the World Cup group draw?

The 2022 World Cup will begin with 32 teams in eight groups of four:

  • Group A: Qatar, Ecuador, Senegal, Netherlands
  • Group B: England, Iran, USA, Wales
  • Group C: Argentina, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Poland
  • Group D: France, Australia, Denmark, Tunisia

What are the World Cup format and schedule?

Four matches will be played each day during the group stage, which will run over a period of 12 days and the winners and runners-up will progress to the round of 16.

Unlike Euro 2020, there will be a third-place play-off game on December 17.

When will the matches kick-off?

The first two rounds of matches will start at 1 pm, 4 pm, 7 pm, and 10 pm local time (10 am, 1 pm, 4 pm, and 7 pm in the UK).

Kick-off times for the final round of group games and knockout round matches will be 6 pm and 10 pm local time (3 pm and 7 pm UK time).

The final is scheduled to start at 6 pm local time (3 pm UK time).

What are the venues?

The group games will be played in eight stadiums: Al Bait Stadium, Khalifa International Stadium, Al-Thammama Stadium, Ahmed Bin Ali Stadium, Lusail Stadium, Ras Abu Abboud Stadium, Education City Stadium, Al-Janoob Stadium.

What will happen with the Premier League?

The Premier League season has been adjusted to accommodate the World Cup which takes place in the middle of the domestic calendar.

The season began a week earlier than usual on 6 August 2022, with 16 matchdays until the weekend of 12/13 November, before the tournament kicks off on 20 November.

The Premier League will resume on Boxing Day after the World Cup final on December 18.

The final match round of the 2022/23 season will be played on 28 May 2023.
