Cristiano Ronaldo stays with Manchester United through the transfer deadline of 2022

Superstar Cristiano Ronaldo is set to stay with Manchester United until the start of this autumn’s World Cup.

What happens next is anyone’s guess.

As Rob Dawson points out for ESPN, the summer transfer window closed on Thursday and Ronaldo remains linked with United. The 37-year-old was reportedly keen to join the squad for the UEFA Champions League competition but was unable to secure a move before Thursday’s deadline.

It was reported on Wednesday that United never received “substantial approaches from major Champions League clubs” for Ronaldo. United manager Erik ten Hague had previously insisted the five-time Ballon d’Or winner was in his plans for this season and reiterated such claims on Wednesday. Ten Hague then confirmed Ronaldo’s status after Thursday’s 1-0 win over Leicester City.

“Like we said [he’s stayed],” ten Hague commented about CR7. “It’s really the start of the season. We have a squad, with more than 11 starters and that’s what you’re seeing now. The players on the bench can play in two to three weeks.”

Ronaldo did not start on Thursday but came on in the 68th minute of the match. Meanwhile, United have won three Premier League games in a row after losing their first two and are now fifth in the table.

Regardless of what has happened in the past two months, Ronaldo and Ten Hague will likely need each other by the time the Qatar World Cup kicks off in November. The Portugal captain will want to be fully fit and at his best, and Ten Hague should use someone who scored 24 goals in all competitions for the club last season.

United next host Arsenal (first place with five wins from five games) at Old Trafford on Sunday.
