English Premier League table 2022/23: Updated EPL standings and race for title, Champions League places

English Premier League table 2022/23: Defending champions Manchester City have made an excellent start to their 2022/23 Premier League season with two wins from two matches and no goals conceded. And the only team that has been able to keep pace with them so far is Arsenal, that too on six points.

Tottenham Hotspur couldn’t join them, although they did manage to salvage a point with a late Harry Kane equalizer as they drew 2-2 with Chelsea in a thrilling game at Stamford Bridge.

Brentford, Newcastle, Leeds, and Brighton have continued to pick up points in the first two matchdays, while at the opposite end, Manchester United and Everton are stuck on zero points after two matches. Man United is dead last and looking worse than last season, while Frank Lampard is promising changes in the two weeks before the transfer window closes.

Below is the full Premier League table followed by a snapshot of every race up to the end of last season while we wait for the second match week of 2022/23 to be played in full.

The Premier League title race

Last season’s Premier League title charge was sensational, as Manchester City finished just one point ahead of Liverpool in the race leading up to the final matchday of the season.

This year, the title race is likely to be a two-horse race between those aforementioned teams, unless someone else proves they can hang with the Giants. Tottenham looks like the early favorites to challenge Man City and Liverpool, but Arsenal and Manchester United have also improved this summer.

Conversely, there are doubts about whether Chelsea can hold on to their top 4 spots this season, and before fans believe they can make a case for the top spot, a serious A statement will be required.

Champions League Places: Chasing Top 4

Apart from the two title challengers, Chelsea and Tottenham secured the last two Champions League spots last season, finishing third and fourth.

In this campaign, the two clubs are heading in opposite directions. Tottenham looked like one of the best teams in the league in the second half of last season, and a successful summer has seen Spurs look like leaders for third place in the table. Chelsea, meanwhile, is a squad in transition, and a lackluster pre-season raised fears the Blues could drop out of the coveted top 4.

Those looking to capitalize on any mistakes include Arsenal and Manchester United, who have both improved this summer and could look for early additions to take advantage.

Premier League European Venues

In the English top flight for 2022/23, in addition to the four Champions League places, there are three other berths for European competitions:

  • Europa League (2 berths): One automatically goes to the 5th-placed Premier League team, and the other to the winner of the FA Cup. But if the winner of the FA Cup finishes in the top 5, the Europa League berth awarded by the FA Cup will go to the next highest table finisher who has not already qualified for the Europa League.
  • Conference League (1 berth): This goes to the winner of the EFL Cup (Carabao Cup). However, if the winner of the EFL Cup has already qualified for the Champions League or Europa League, the Conference League berth goes to the next highest table finisher who has not already qualified for European competition.

Last season, Arsenal confirmed a Europa League berth with a fifth-place finish.

Furthermore, as Liverpool won both the FA Cup and the EFL Cup and already confirmed a place in the Champions League with second place in the table, sixth-placed Manchester United secured a place in the Europa League. 1 place while West Ham took the seventh position. A place in the Conference League.

Who will fall short of the top 4 this season? And will another side like Leicester City or Newcastle secure a place in the UEFA competition next season?

Premier League relegation

As always, the bottom three teams in the Premier League are relegated to the second tier the following season, a huge blow that clubs want to avoid at all costs.

Last season, Burnley, Watford, and Norwich City finished in the relegation zone and all three teams are playing in the Second Division this campaign. In their place are Fulham, Bournemouth, and Nottingham Forest, who will hope to secure a more permanent place in the top flight.

Leeds United, Everton, and Southampton narrowly avoided the drop last season and will hope to be a bit more comfortable this year. Crystal Palace, Aston Villa, and Brentford could also be thrust into the relegation battle with any sustained dry spells.
